3 painful facts about cybercrime

Is your organization resistant to cybercrime? If you think so, how sure are you? There are more than 2 million companies in the Netherlands, of which more than 3,000 have more than 250 employees.

Is your organization resistant to cybercrime? If you think so, how sure are you? There are more than 2 million companies in the Netherlands, of which more than 3,000 have more than 250 employees. Research by CBS shows that large companies with more than 250 employees are more often the target of cybercriminals than smaller companies. Larger companies have more sites, more hardware, and thus more potential vulnerabilities to hack.

1. Cybercrime in the Netherlands

Of the large organizations, 8% annually encounter cybercrime from outside – think of malware and phishing emails.

25% of organizations with more than 250 employees annually deal with cybercrime due to internal causes – such as failure of IT systems or losing a laptop or passwords.

“The loss of a laptop can be a source for cybercriminals”

2. Bad preparation against cybercrime

Did you know that only 12% of organizations in the Netherlands are well prepared against cybercrime? That are 240,000 organizations; 1.76 million organizations have their security insufficiently in order. This is apparent from research by ABN Amro

Organizations with good security have achieved this by applying technical solutions – such as network and security in the Cloud – security protocols and employee awareness. With this 12%, the Netherlands is far behind in Europe when it comes to taking active action against cybercrime.

“Just 12% is prepared!”

3. Focus on primary sites

Many organizations with traditional firewalls invest in the security of primary sites (headquarters, data centers, etc.) and save on the security of smaller sites, which also have access to the corporate network. You need to include these smaller locations in the same

security policy as the primary sites. Otherwise, they are a potential vulnerability and a preferred target for cybercriminals.
